In 1984, the California Historical Society honored the Walter H. Leimert Company by presenting an award to the Leimert family for its having been involved in California Real Estate for over 100 years.
The company's history dates back to Louis Leimert in San Francisco, California. Louis Leimert had been trained as a confectioner in his native Baden, Germany. He spent a brief time in Philadelphia before moving to San Francisco in 1860 to continue his trade as a candy maker.
Walter H. Leimert was the eldest of Louis and Anna's thirteen children. Leimert joined forces with Wickham Havens in 1917 and created the upscale residential park community along Trestle Glen Creek in the Oakland Hills area. Leimert and Havens envisioned beautiful homes in this natural environment, with the richness of the upscale design for the wealthy, with one of the first homeowners association' s recorded in the history of California. The Olmstead Brothers, sons of New York Central Park designer, Frederick Law Olmstead, drafted a plan with curvy streets along the natural hillside. This community is known as Lakeshore Highlands.
Leimert migrated to Southern California in the1920's and continued to develop planned communities. His early efforts were concentrated on parts of Glendale (Bellehurst Park) and East Los Angeles. Later, Leimert Park and Baldwin Hills became monuments to his talent. After World War II he was joined by his son, Walter "Tim" Leimert Jr. (1921-2004). The father and son team developed the impressive Beverlywood area, adjacent to Beverly Hills. This development together with nearby Cheviot Hills became highly sought after by young professional families. In later years, areas of the Hollywood Hills and Orange County also bore the stamp of the Leimert name.
Walter H. Leimert III is active in the Leimert Companies. He focuses his attention on management of operations and the development of Cambria Pines Estates in Cambria, California. The Cambria project combines an artful design, environmentally sensitive landscape, magnificent views with carefully selected home sites.
